MAMMOTH SAFARI August 12-21, 2020
Harriet Schwartz, John and Jean Fiske, Ellen Gilman and Shirley Wiegand are planning a five-day safari to Mammoth Lakes, CA from August 16-21, 2020. Here’s an update to help you decide whether to register when sign-ups begin in January 2020.
Why join the Mammoth Safari?
· We’ll hike in a spectacular granite and forest landscape with crystalline lakes. Check out Saddlebag Lake, Chickenfoot Lake, 20 Lakes Basin, Mammoth Crest, Convict Lake at https://www.monocounty.org/places-to-go/lakes-rivers-creeks/
· Hikes will be offered for active Amblers - Scramblers
· We’ll all stay at the Best Western High Sierra Hotel in the town of Mammoth Lakes at 8,000’. More information at https://www.bestwestern.com/en_US/book/hotels-in-mammoth-lakes/best-western-plus-high-sierra-hotel/propertyCode.05691.html
· Meals: breakfast at the hotel, lunches on the trail and dinners at your choice of the many local restaurants.
But is the Mammoth Safari for me?
· We will hike and stay at high elevation! To be accepted for the Safari, you must be physically capable of hiking at elevations of 7,200-11,000 feet. (Ambler hikes at elevations up to 9,000’, Rambler – Scrambler as high as 11,000’)
· To ease adjustment to the altitude initial hikes will be shorter and will climb gradually. Hikes will increase in length and will climb higher each day.
· Tips on adjusting to altitude can be found on the Internet; one site is https://www.visitmammoth.com/high-altitude-tips.
How do I register?
Registration for the Safari will begin at noon on January 10, 2020 and will be by email only, first come, first served.
