Welcome Volunteer Process and Procedures

The Club Procedure for New Members Includes:

  1. Potential Members contact the Welcome Volunteer (WV) at the number provided in the Rossmoor News.

  2. The WV job rotates equally between groups. The rotation is supervised by a coordinator who sees that the contact telephone number for the Club is changed in the Rossmoor News.

  3. The WV: (1) speaks with the prospective member ASAP, (2) Confirms s/he has a Rossmoor Resident Card, and (3) helps him or her find an appropriate hiking group.

  4. The new member gives the Registrar the completed Application, Waiver and check. The Registrar forwards this information to the Membership Chair, and the Technology Coordinator.  The registrar sends the check to the Treasurer.

  5. Anyone who wishes to try out the Club without joining may do so only as a guest who is sponsored by a Club member.  The prospective member and host must comply with the Guest Policy.

The goal of the Welcome Volunteer (WV) is to welcome, inform and help the new member select the appropriate hiking group

Provide general comments to him/her about happy to learn of his/her interest in the club and let the Potential Member know we have 5 different hiking groups.

  1. Monday Morning Golf Club walkers: walk as far as they want around the golf course.

  2. Amblers: hike an average of 4 miles at a moderate pace with frequent stops, up to 500 feet elevation gain.

  3. Ramblers: hike 5-7 miles at a moderate pace with frequent stops, up to 1,500 feet elevation gain.

  4. Trekkers: hike 6-8 miles at a moderate pace up to 1,800 feet gain, and at a slower pace up to 2,000 feet.

  5. Scramblers: 6-10 miles, up to 2,000 feet elevation gain and a fast pace if less than 1,000 feet elevation. Occasionally, a super scramble will go to 13 miles, up to 3,000 feet elevation.

Explain that all groups enjoy the outdoors, the views, nature, and the company of hiking together.  In order to help them select the right group for them, we’d like to know their general hiking experience

The following are guideline questions:

What’s your hiking experience?  Listen or ask for how recent, how frequent, length, other hiking clubs to which they belonged.

Can you give me some idea of where you hiked, for example, National parks, State parks, local hikes?

Ask them in which of the groups they think they best fit.  Given the information provided, if you do not agree, you might state that from what they told you, they might be more comfortable in the group you think they best fit, and that, in any case, they can try it and move if that group doesn’t suit them.

Inform them that there’s a social component to the Club and that more information can be found on our website: trailsclubofrossmoor.com.

To join, they need to complete the application/   waiver, and send it with a check for the current amount of membership dues to the current Registrar (supply his or her name and address). Remind them to review the Rules of the Trail and complete the Medical Form which needs to be kept in his/her hiking pack. Explain the purpose of these.

If they wish to try out the club without joining, they may do so as a guest who is sponsored by a club member.
